When I found out I was going to interview Rob Lowe about his new skin-care line, Profile, I wanted to call my 15-year-old self and tell her: “Don’t worry about the annoying struggles right now. It will all be worth it some day.” A bit lame, I know, but thankfully, I managed to keep the blushing in check while Lowe talked about his five latest products and how every man will soon be able to smell like him. So without further delay, Rob Lowe…
On Profile: “For years people have been asking me, How do you maintain yourself? What do you do? What’s going on with you?’ And teaching my two sons how to look their best and present themselves to the world, I realized there’s a conversation to be had there with guys. But there’s not a lot [of products] to choose from. So much feels like repurposed versions of what’s created for the gals. Profile was built from scratch specifically for male skin—the size of our pores, the thickness, the level of oiliness. It’s taken six long, wonderful years.”
On shaving: “There are a lot of men who aren’t shaving right now, and I would like to put an end to that trend.” [If all males would look like Lowe without a beard, I fully support that initiative as well.] “But I don’t think I’m man enough to do it.”
On the Profile product women can’t stop using: “During the prototype stage, the women in my life would steal the rollerball eye serum, and I would never see it again!” [Ed note: When I tried it, it absorbed quickly and had a silky feel. The finish was neutral with zero sheen. I totally get how that’s perfect for males since they probably don’t want to look like they just had a facial, but I prefer a little dewiness.] “It was designed because whenever I was tired and had bags or dark circles, there would be some very high-end expensive thing people would put under my eyes to make them look good. It’s a real legit thing that I would have never even known about had I not been in this business. Guys should have it, too, and be able to carry it around like Chapstick.”
On what’s coming next:“The thing I’m most excited about is our fragrance, which will launch in the spring. I just looked at the final prototype of the bottle—it’s killer. I’ve been working with an amazing fragrance house in New York, and we started the process over two years ago. I’m wearing it right now!”
Sadly, I did not get close enough to sniff Lowe. Should the opportunity arise in the future, I’ll report back.
