There’s no magic skin-perfecting tablet, but there are a handful of supplements you can take that will benefit your skin’s health and, in turn, your complexion. As for the rest of the exotic extracts touted in skin supplements? They don’t do squat. (Sorry, drinkable collagen.)
Resveratrol: This natural antioxidant (famously found in red wine) has been shown in some studies to protect skin against UV damage, increase elasticity, and diminish age spots. An alcohol-free way to reap its benefits: concentrated supplements of the stuff (like Caudalie Vinexpert Dietary Supplements).
Antioxidants: There’s an antioxidant supplement called Heliocare that dermatologists love. Why? “There are a number of studies that have shown
it will reduce the cell damage and inflammation caused by ultraviolet-light exposure,” says Heidi Waldorf, an associate clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. “I recommend it to patients who have melasma for the summertime and when they go on vacation.”
Omega-3: Taken regularly, omega-3 supplements have been shown to decrease inflammation, which can help with acne (we like Perricone MD Omega 3 Dietary Supplement). But a word of caution: Large doses of fish oil thin your blood, making bleeding during surgical procedures (and even Botox and dermal fillers) a whole lot worse. They can also interact with other medications you are taking. So make sure to tell your doctor if you take them.
