Looking for #relationshipgoals inspo? Meet former W magazine accessories director Claudia Mata and her yogi husband Zander Gladish, co-owners of Vertly Balm, the just-launched line of cannabis-powered lip butters we can’t stop reapplying. (They even namaslayed their wedding, eloping six years ago at the absurdly luxurious, Goop-approved Ananda spa in the Indian Himalayas. In flowing white fabrics. Surrounded by freakin’ flower petals.) Recently, the couple packed up their NYC life and moved to Northern California, combining their passions — an eye for style (her) and a great weed hookup (him) — to create the chic lip balms. “Zander’s family owns cannabis farms and is involved with a few up-and-coming cannabis companies. I’ve always been drawn to natural, food-grade lip balms,” says Mata. “We started thinking, How great would it be to make high-quality, small-batch lip butters with the benefits of cannabis?”
The result is three organic lip balms with a spare, unisex look that wouldn’t be out of place at an upscale skincare shop…or at Burning Man. Vertly offers lip butters scented with spicy cinnamon rose, cooling peppermint, or seasonal extracts based on what’s growing in sunny California at the time. “We want them to taste good so you keep licking your lips all day,” she says. Clever marketing ploy, no? You can “accidentally” ingest it without fear — the ingredients are certified organic, sourced locally when possible, and they take the “small-batch” thing literally — oils are slowly infused over weeks, and the balms are hand-poured for extra artisanal street cred. Insider tip for people who prefer not to stick your fingers into beauty products — they’ll soon be sold in tubes, so stay tuned.
“Microdosing is a huge trend in Silicon Valley,” says Mata. It’s not about getting high. The idea is that using tiny doses of cannabis at 2.5mg or lower — compared to a typical dose, which is around 10mg — can give you the calming, anti-anxiety benefits of weed without the high. “The lip butters are our way of introducing people to the cannabis world without throwing them right in,” she says.
With 40mg THC per pot (haha), Vertly Green Cannabis Infused Lip Butter is currently only sold in California through select dispensaries and delivery services. At press time, marijuana is legal (in some form) in 29 states plus Washington DC, but since it’s federally illegal and considered a Class I drug, it can’t be shipped over state lines.
Sourced from legal industrial hemp, Vertly CBD Infused Lip Butter, however, is available everywhere. “CBD is anti-inflammatory and has anti-anxiety properties. It helps relieve PMS and clear skin. There are so many wonderful things about it,” says Mata.
Vertly Natural Lip Butter is hemp-infused, with no THC or CBD — it’s “the G-rated one,” Mata says. Hempseed oil is known for its skin-soothing powers, but many of the best organic formulas still bear the scent of weed’s hippie-dippy past. (“Why does everything have to smell like sage or patchouli?” she says.) In clean, black and white packaging, with sophisticated scents like rose spiked with cinnamon and fresh peppermint, you can kiss those headshop vibes goodbye — knowing your lips will be soft and pillowy AF.
