The Free the Nipple campaign is back to challenge Instagram’s nipple censorship policy—but this time, enthusiasts have upped the ante.
Back in 2015, Instagram found itself in the midst of a controversy when activists declared its no-female-nipple policy was sexist and unfair: Women’s topless photos would get censored if they showed nipple, but men’s wouldn’t. When Instagram refused to change the policy—allowing photographs of female nipples only if it showed “post-mastectomy scarring [or] women actively breastfeeding”—the campaigners found a smarter way to wage the war against censorship. They’re posting pictures of nipples without any clue as to whose body it belongs to under an account aptly titled Genderless_Nipples.

First noticed by Cosmopolitan.com, the purpose of the campaign is simple: If Instagram cannot tell if the nipple belongs to a man or a woman, they shouldn’t censor it. The campaign seeks to prove that female nipples aren’t inherently sexual; they’re simply a body part that all humans have. The account, which boasts 3,836 followers and counting, features male and female nips of all different shapes, sizes, and colors. The pictures themselves aren’t the most aesthetically pleasing—nipples look kind of weird when snapped up close—but it successfully makes Instagram’s censorship policy look a bit strange. The account’s bio sums up Genderless_Nipples’s mission perfectly:
“Men are allowed to show their nipples, women’s get banned. Support ALL genders! Let’s change this policy!”
