At the 2018 Golden Globes on Sunday, Oprah Winfrey delivered a powerful speech as she accepted her Cecil B. DeMille Award. In it, she spoke about many pressing issues, including racial violence, systemic racism, tyranny, free speech, sexual violence, and abuse. She brought attention to the story of Recy Taylor, a black woman gang-raped by a group of white men in 1944, and appeared to take President Donald Trump to task without naming names. “We know the press is under siege these days,” Winfrey said. “We also know it’s the insatiable dedication to uncovering the absolute truth that keeps us from turning a blind eye to corruption and to injustice. To tyrants and victims, and secrets and lies.”
Winfrey’s speech was met with three standing ovations and has received widespread acclaim, even prompted many calls on social media for Winfrey to run for president in 2020. On Monday night, First Daughter Ivanka Trump decided to weigh in as well. “Just saw @Oprah’s empowering & inspiring speech at last night’s #GoldenGlobes,” she tweeted. “Let’s all come together, women & men, & say #TIMESUP! #United”
Unsurprisingly, this message was not well received. Almost immediately, Twitter users began responding to what they viewed Ivanka’s extreme hypocrisy, pointing out that Winfrey was taking aim at Ivanka’s father — a man who has been accused of sexual assault or harassment by well over a dozen women. Alyssa Milano, a vocal proponent of the #MeToo movement started by Tarana Burke, tweeted, “Great! You can make a lofty donation to the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund that is available to support your father’s accusers.” Milano included the link to the website of anti–sexual-harassment initiative Time’s Up.
Antonio Del Otero, a teenager who was famously blocked by the president, tweeted, “don’t sit there asking everyone to unite together against sexual assault when you’re [sic] father is a sexual abuser and you turned a blind eye to that. hypocrite.” In another tweet, Del Otero continued, “you have no intention of helping anyone. you care only for money and power so much so that you choose to turn a blind eye towards a disgusting crime. you are a JOKE and your father is too.”
Meanwhile, Chrissy Teigen simply tweeted, “ew go away.”
Other Twitter users have joined in by tweeting the names and pictures of some of Trump’s accusers. According to New York Magazine, Trump has been accused of harassing or assaulting over 19 women, including Jessica Leeds, Ivana Trump, Kristin Anderson, Jill Harth, Lisa Boyne, five Miss Teen USA contestants, Temple Taggart McDowell, Cathy Heller, Karena Virginia, Mindy McGillivray, Jennifer Murphy, Juliet Huddy, Rachel Crooks, Ninni Laaksonen, Samantha Holvey, Jessica Drake, Summer Zervos, Natasha Stoynoff, and Cassandra Searles.
